NCKU-National Cheng Kung Aim for the Top University Project

Welcome to NCKU Aim for the Top University Project

Biotechnology - Key to the Future

In order to present the outstanding achievements of the leading Universities in cutting-edge theories and practical research, the Ministry of Education held the "Exceptional Decade - Giving Back to Society" achievement presentation conference series. The theme of the conference was "Biotechnology: Key to the Future" and it was organized by NCKU's "Aim for the Top University Project" promotion center. The schools from the project presented their achievements in future biotechnology as they sought to promote industry cooperation.

The press conference for the "Exceptional Decade - Giving Back to Society" achievement presentation conference series was hosted by Department of Higher Education Director-General Huang Wen-Ling. Director-General Huang, organizer school NCKU President Dr. Su Huey-Jen, and National Yang-Ming University (NYMU) President Dr. Liang Kung-Yee also gave speeches at the event. President Su pointed out in her speech that countries around the world, such as Germany, Canada, Belgium, and the Netherlands have invested long-term stable resources into higher education, and Taiwan must not be absent in this round of competition in higher education. Moreover, the government should also continue to pay attention to higher education.

NCKU's orchid research center displayed its chocolate orchid at the press conference. Chocolate orchid utilizes and incorporates Belgian chocolate into the flowers, stems and leaves of the Taiwanese Phalaenopsis orchid. It also serves as a success symbol of the "Aim for the Top University Project" in integrating industries and being applicable to the community. This achievement was shared with the audience nationwide by Director-General Huang and NCKU's President Su.

NCKU is a major center for research in biomedicine. Recent significant advancement in biomedical research disciplines and technology development were not just outstanding research results published in top international biomedical journals, but also represented a further step in the formation of cross-disciplinary partnership to transform research results into economic productivity. Examples: Distinguished Professor Chuang Woei-Jer of the Institute of Biochemistry, School of Medicine and his research team has developed the αvβ3 antagonistic drug which can be applied to treatment of diseases such as cancer-caused bone metastasis, macular degeneration and osteoporosis. Professor Wu Li-Wha of the Institute of Molecular Medicine, School of Medicine and her team has determined the connection pathways between inflammation and intestinal regeneration. They have provided a new treatment direction of intestinal inflammatory diseases for Taiwan's medical sector. Distinguished Professor Chen Hong-Hwa of the Institute of Tropical Plant Sciences, Institute of Biotechnology, and her research team focuses on indigenous Phalaenopsis orchids of Taiwan as their research subject. They have constructed and completed a genetic database for Phalaenopsis orchids (OrchidBase). This generates economic productivity and enhances basic Phalaenopsis orchid research and industry competitiveness. Assistant Professor Chiou Tsyr-Huei of the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology is part of an international research team. It has proven that the 12 types of photoreceptor cells of mantis shrimps function independently and allows for parallel processing of different light wavelengths. This enables a high efficiency in the mantis shrimps' color receptor system. This research can be used in the field of optics to enhance mechanisms and technology in parallel processing efficacy.

Furthermore, apart from incorporating and connecting existing university resources, NCKU is also gradually expanding the core strength of its learning environment so that it can achieve the dual purpose of nurturing biomedical research talents with international perspectives, as well as to promote the commercialization of research results. In addition, with the support of the Tainan City Government, Academia Sinica, Southern Taiwan Science Park, and corporate resources, the NCKU Research Center at Southern Taiwan Science Park was established. It promotes industry cooperation in research projects while resource and funding is provided by both NCKU and the enterprises. As a result, research achievements are shared amongst all contributors. It is hoped that in future the immense potential benefits from commercialization can be reaped. It promotes industrialization of local research results and invests in Taiwan's biomedical industry to contribute to the society and benefit the community.
